A 36-year-old former Mercy Memorial Health Center employee appeared in Carter County District Court Wednesday pleading guilty to charges she had embezzled hospital funds.
District Attorney Craig Ladd said prior to her afternoon court appearance, Lisa K. Smith had paid $31,000 in restitution.

“Pursuant to negotiations (plea bargain) she was placed on probation for five years (five year deferred sentence) and was fined $750,” Ladd said.

Smith was charged with embezzlement Jan. 26. The charge accused her of “fraudulently appropriating the sum of approximately $31,261.44 that belonged to Mercy Memorial Health Center .... which had been entrusted to her pursuant to her employment ...”

The charge further accused Smith of “diverting money to her own use” that had been provided  “... by various customers of Mercy Memorial Health Center as payments ...”
Evidence in the case was the result of an investigation conducted by the Ardmore Police Department.

Wednesday afternoon MMHC emailed the following press release to The Ardmoreite concerning the case against Smith.

“We can confirm that she is a former employee of Mercy Memorial Health Center. We have performed an audit and we want to assure the public that no patient accounts were compromised. All funds in question are Mercy losses. We will be thoroughly supportive of and cooperating with the District Attorney’s office.”

Without making full restitution and entering into a plea bargain, Smith had faced a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000 plus restitution in the case.
