Forty percent of Americans prefer to drink wine, 34 percent say they reach for a beer, 20 percent prefer hard liquor and 2 percent say their alcohol beverage of choice is something else, according to a recent public onion poll of 1,000 American adults.

Here’s what else the poll showed:

51 percent prefer red wine over white, while 33 percent choose white wine instead and 15 percent are undecided.

53 percent are more likely to drink a domestic beer than an imported one, down significantly from 61 percent in May 2011, while 28 percent prefer an imported brand of beer and 19 percent are unsure.

Americans are more closely divided over whether they prefer regular or light beer: 46 percent choose a light beer first, while 40 percent go for a regular one.

When it comes to hard liquor, 24 percent cite vodka as their favorite, while 18 percent choose bourbon, 13 percent prefer rum, 10 percent scotch, 9 percent like tequila the most, 7 percent favor gin, 8 percent opt for something else, and 11 percent are undecided.

Just 36 percent of Americans say they rarely or never drink.
