Emma Lee (Arnett) Wright was born on March 9, 1950, to Alex Arnett Sr. and Johnnie Mae Stevenson-Arnett in Hollis, Okla. She was the fifth child (second daughter) of 14 children. After a courageous and brave battle with cancer, she succumbed to the disease at her home and was called home to glory in the afternoon on May 6, 2015.
Emma attended and graduated from school in Milo, Okla., at Central Schools where she competed in basketball. She accepted Christ at an early age and was currently a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. She received her Bachelor of Political Science degree in Criminal Justice on May 14, 1988, from East Central University in Ada.
She was the mother of four children, Gayle, Cheryl (Missy), Harold (Joe) and Sean. Affectionately known as Ms. Emma to a lot of children in the Ardmore area, she had a stern and brute way about her that received and earned their respect. She was the chairperson of the culinary ministry at Mt. Pleasant before she had to have knee surgery in the summer of 2013.
She was a nanny to several families in the Ardmore area. She loved to cook and always wanted to make sure you left her house full if and when you visited, like IHOP (Come hungry, leave happy). She was very passionate about cooking.
She was preceded in death by her father, Alex; sister, Linda E.; and brothers, Sanford L. and David O.
She leaves to cherish and celebrate her homegoing, her mother, Johnnie Mae; two daughters: Gayle E. Wright-Swindle (Melvin) and Cheryl Ann Wright, both of Oklahoma City; two sons, Harold J. Brown (Julia) and Sean L. Wright, both of Ardmore; 10 siblings: Willie, Violevia, Alex Jr., Johnny L., Samuel (Wynona), Mary Franklin (Ardis), Jerry Sr., Glen Sr., Adena, and Jess; 11 grandchildren: Jessica, Reginald, Nychole, Brittany, Leneé, Damontre, Sheronica, Tyler, Trajan, Melvin II, and Tristan; three great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Xavier and Harmonica; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015, at First Baptist Church West in Ardmore.
Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Craddock Funeral Home.
Services are under the direction of Howard-Harris Funeral Home in Oklahoma City.
