1. The annual Lake Murray fireworks display takes place this evening.  This is a perfect family-friendly event as the public is invited to come to park grounds, bring a lawn chair, blanket for seating and enjoy the evening before the show begins at dusk.  

2. It is summer time in Davis today. The annual Davis Summerfest is today at Wolf Field. This Independence Day Celebration begins at 5 p.m. and includes live entertainment, a mechanical bull, food vendors, games and inflatables for kids. Summerfest concludes with a  fireworks show at dusk.  

3. Area softball teams will gather in Wilson today and Saturday to play games and raise funds for Relay For Life and the Wilson Fire Department. Games will begin this evening and continue into early Saturday. Games take place at Wilson High School softball fields.

4. The Old Fashioned July 4th Festival and Parade will be conducted in Tishomingo’s Pennington Creek Park Saturday. This annual community event includes a parade, food, live entertainment, creative arts and crafts booths and the national pinto bean spitting contests. Events begins at 8 a.m. with the parade set for 10 a.m. Fireworks will be shot off at dusk and crowds are encouraged to head to the Murray State College baseball fields for a good watch spot.

5. For those that can out spit others in watermelon spitting contests, they might want to make the drive to Pauls Valley Saturday for the 58th annual World Championship Watermelon Seed Spittin’ Contest. Held at Wacker Park, the family-friendly event has been featured in the Guiness Book of Records and also Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Registration for the contest begins at 6 p.m. In addition to the contest, live music and concessions will be offered.
