And this is where we have to find our fight. Our fight against fear. Parisians have taken a two fold approach; one- they did send bombs and two- they got up the next day and walked the streets, played music, and  laughed  with their children. They faced fear with living. Much the same as the Kenyan students and families did after their school was attacked,” killing 147 at Garissa University. A radical group I won't bother naming has claimed responsibility. In January, this same group attacked a bus in the Waza Region and in  that  same month, under the guise of calling villagers out to listen to a sermon, they then kidnapped their young men and boys–the training that will follow will be designed potentially to form new recruits who will then be used against their own people. A forced draft by the insane and cruel. Later that year, in Arar, Saudi Arabia, two suicide bombers ambushed border patrol and killed 2 guards. Another non named group was responsible. Later, in Istanbul,Turkey, a female bomber set herself off outside a police station. At Port de Vincennes, France, a kosher market was attacked and hostages taken, four people died. In Maiduguri, Nigeria a ten year old girl donned a vest and killed 19 people. In Potiskum, Nigeria, two more  ten year old girls walked into a market, one detonated causing many causalities, the other ran away and was detonated in the middle of a road. ” (Sourced from Wikipedia chart of Terroist Activity in 2015) These were potentially girls who  had been kidnapped by this group. In Xinijang, China as part of a totally different group than those making the news, a man used an axe and an explosive device but was unsuccessful. And in the U.S., a disgruntled former employee of a news station planned and executed former coworkers and  a city official  on national television. Terrorism   does not have one face. Nor one color. Nor one ethnicity nor gender. It is the product of those gaining power who have no ability to administer power, it is misguided governments arming citizens who have so much trauma they cannot begin to see straight. It is rebels who fight for freedom and then  become the terrorists they once hated. It is religions identifying one another as the enemy. It is poverty straining communities. It is wealthy effecting laws that reduce coffers for adequate societal functioning. It is businesses continuing to squeeze more from workers while denying their basic respect of time with family, time to rest, and adequate pay to live. It is the child who is lost after peer rejection, finding peer and intention in the video games we use to train our soldiers. It is thinking terror is a person not in our family, our community, or our belief. It is the child in a home with people who should never have had a child, the parent's themselves becoming the terrorist. It is in the lost   accountability we have towards one another's lives. It is in the social media blitz of hate we let foster while telling our children that bullying is bad. It is our behavior. It is governments, dictators, monarchies, and prime ministers playing a chess game none of us know the playing field of. It is the “them” not “us” mentality that allows terror to grow into a weapon held in hands across the globe. Today, my co hort on the Christmas program we work with, received an email of names that had not been turned in yet for wish-lists. The last minute number we got was staggering. Children removed from neglectful homes, from parents having issues, and in some cases, from parents who define their own world of being terror. Some from parents caused in an overzealous crossfire.  We are not sure how to even meet the need of the newly admitted. But this process, removing children, it is a double edged sword, Some homes are simply poor and overstretched, needing better services and support rather than removal. Some homes have people whose stability will never be realized and after a cat and mouse game of lawyers and time frames, termination will result-sometimes long after damage is done to children. And some will return home, to families who learn from the process of forced accountability. Our actions as a whole effect the humans they become. But the fear they feel at being controlled by outside forces is very real. And fear without regard for those feeling it, is our biggest challenge. Our Christmas program is one step in battling fear, our willingness to help those In our community by donating our services to help basic needs be met. One very small step. It is a wrapped gift from strangers for a child living among strangers. Maybe for you it is donating plumbing services to a house with no funds. Electricity to a home with no heat. A roof to a home that leaks. A blanket to body that shivers.

Maybe nothing more than a decision to not to be part of the mindset of terror.

This holiday, be kind to you.

And look for an update on the Christmas Wish  List…
