1 A new generation of rodeo stars will show their skills at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum this weekend in the World Jr. Team Roping Championships. The event began Thursday and will run through Sunday as young cowgirls and cowboys compete for top honors. The roping begins at 9 a.m. today, 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

2  Sulphur’s “Opening Night” ceremonies will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday with the lighting of the city’s Christmas lights at 7 p.m. The light display is state of the art and lasts 20 minutes. There also will be carnival games, kid’s activities, inflatables and a cake walk among other activities.

3 The Celebration of Lights will open Saturday night at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. The free drive-through is open daily in December from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and features traditional Christmas themes and Chickasaw greetings. The center is at 867 Cooper Memorial Drive in Sulphur.

4 Ice skating will make its way to the plains of Oklahoma beginning Saturday through Jan. 3 in Pauls Valley. The Pauls Valley Ice Skate Park will be open Fridays through Saturdays. The park is next to the Santa Fe Depot Museum at 2014 Santa Fe in Pauls Valley.

5 Five area football teams have achieved the preseason goal of practicing on Thanksgiving Day. They will be put to the test Friday in quarterfinal action. Lone Grove will host Locust Grove at 1 p.m., and Sulphur will host Lincoln Christian at 7 p.m. Davis also will be at home Friday to host Adair at 7 p.m. Ringling will travel to Talihina for a 1 p.m. kickoff and Kingston will be at Haskell with kick off at 7:30 p.m.
