August gardening tips for Oklahoma

August is living up to its “dog days of summer” reputation of high heat and humidity that makes gardeners long for fall. Unfortunately, this summer has been three months of high heat, high humidity, and extremely low rainfall. The following are things that can be done this month in addition to the never-ending tasks of watering, deadheading, and controlling weeds.

Our next state superintendent

I have written literally hundreds of articles and two books about very controversial issues, but I am reluctant to address specific individuals because it’s too easy to inadvertently villainize people nowadays. When we face an election like this week’s primary, however, we must consider people and pick sides. I am not sure the traditional sides fit anymore, so let’s start by focusing on the qualities of our next leader.

Summer Reading Program wraps up with prize drawings

ARDMORE – Ardmore Public Library ended its Summer Reading Programs for children and adults with prize drawings for all who completed our summer reading challenges using Beanstack. Children completed the Star Reader SRP Challenge by reading at least five books over the summer. Once children completed the reading challenge, they would receive one free book, a day pass to the Ardmore Community Water Park and an entry into our grand prize drawing. Children were then encouraged to read more for additional free books throughout the summer.

Online friendship starting to wear out after dustups

DEAR ABBY: I made a friend six years ago on social media. We have never actually met in person, but we have stayed in touch. She began contacting me on a daily basis about a year ago, which was great at the time, because I took a few years off work to care for my baby. It was lovely to converse with another adult as a stay-at-home parent. She’s a very nice lady who is old enough to be my mother but, unfortunately, suffers from severe agoraphobia. She rarely leaves her house. Her window to the world is her cellphone.
