Summer watering tips and myths

According to the OK Mesonet, Oklahoma has set new records weather-wise this summer. Once again, we went from winter to summer with barely a nod at spring, which is not terribly unique; however, June is usually fairly cool and rainy except this year. We have had more days above 90 and 100 degrees and more days without rainfall than we have had for many years with no relief in sight. I was really hoping for an unusually cool August with lots of summer showers, but the forecast does not give hope for that. This summer has provided the absolute worst conditions for plants and the people who care for them. Most of us are to the point now that we are just trying to survive the heat and drought and keep our plants alive until cooler temperatures and rains come in September, hopefully. It certainly hasn’t helped that electric and water bills have doubled this month, either. When the rains don’t come regularly and Mother Nature needs some help, there are some things we can do to help our plants survive.
