Summer watering tips and myths

According to the OK Mesonet, Oklahoma has set new records weather-wise this summer. Once again, we went from winter to summer with barely a nod at spring, which is not terribly unique; however, June is usually fairly cool and rainy except this year. We have had more days above 90 and 100 degrees and more days without rainfall than we have had for many years with no relief in sight. I was really hoping for an unusually cool August with lots of summer showers, but the forecast does not give hope for that. This summer has provided the absolute worst conditions for plants and the people who care for them. Most of us are to the point now that we are just trying to survive the heat and drought and keep our plants alive until cooler temperatures and rains come in September, hopefully. It certainly hasn’t helped that electric and water bills have doubled this month, either. When the rains don’t come regularly and Mother Nature needs some help, there are some things we can do to help our plants survive.

Reunion invitation stirs up memories of bullying classmates

DEAR ABBY: I received a Facebook invitation to my 35th high school reunion. I was bullied constantly in every grade. I had no friends in my class, and the memories I have are not pleasant. I composed a letter expressing the hope that the attendees enjoy reminiscing, and then added that I have no desire to see any of them again. In the letter, I called out by name several former classmates with specifics on their bullying and cruel treatment. I told those who were the “nice kids” I felt invisible and like a nonentity. I ended the letter saying that I have a good life, and as an adult one would think the past would be the past. But that invitation triggered all the rejection and pain, which had lasted for years. I wrote that if any of them are parents, I hope they taught their kids and grandkids to do better.

Review: Twins’ harmonies shimmer on album of covers

“Cover to Cover,” The Brother Brothers (Compass Records) Identical twins Adam and David Moss are easy to tell apart on their charming new album of cover tunes. That’s usually David singing the high part, his gentle harmonies with Adam doing a distinctive dance that can only result from plenty of practice and shared genes.

John Frank Hart

John Frank Hart was born January 13, 1932 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He entered heaven’s gates on August 4th, 2022 where he was reunited with his wife Phyllis on her birthday. John was 91 years young. John was raised in the Elk City and Canute area where he rode his horse back and forth from this grandparents house in Canute to his other grandparents home in Elk City. He was largely raised by his grandparents whom he called Mom and Pop. Their home was right next to the rodeo arena where the famous Beutler Brothers rodeoed. He grew up helping Jiggs and Jake Beutler for years at the arena. He broke his leg in the stall with one of the bucking brones so they laid him in the back of the truck and took him to the hospital there in Elk City where his aunt, Etta Musick was the RN. The hospital was named Musick Hospital, after his Aunt. Having 10 aunts and uncles and dozens of cousins he was very spoiled as an only child. At 16 he attended military school in Ponca City where he said he was “roughed up on the first day”. When he left military school he wanted to join the army National Guard so his mother signed for him to join. Shortly after he was sent to Aberdeen, Maryland where he became a weapons specialist. His 45th guard unit was first called in to work the Woodward tornado on April 9, 1947 where 107 people perished and 1000 injured with catastrophic damage.
