OKC Zoo announces arrival of two African painted dogs

Guests visiting the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden’s Predator Pass habitat will have an opportunity to see the Zoo’s newest animal family members two male African painted dogs. The painted dogs, Guy and Remy, both almost four-yearsold, recently arrived at the OKC Zoo from ZooTampa at Lowry Park in Tampa, Florida as part of a breeding recommendation for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP) for African Painted Dogs. Guy and Remy were matched with the Zoo’s female painted dogs, River and Pele, both 3, and are residing at Predator Pass. The OKC Zoo participates in this SSP for African painted dogs and other species as part of a collaborative effort that aims to maintain sustainable populations within AZA accredited zoos and aquariums.

Trees with a future

Southern Living is my escape magazine when the weather is too ____ (hot, cold, dry, wet, stormy, windy). Fill in the blank. I discovered in the May issue, Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana harbors the largest bald cypress tree (Taxodium distichum) east of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Interesting way to describe it, as there are no native bald cypress trees to the west of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Anyway, this giant bald cypress near the Mississippi River is 96 feet tall, 17 feet in diameter and estimated to be about 1,000 years old. Just 536 miles from my house.
