Stitt signs bill banning transgender athletes

Levi Gladd has never competed against a transgender athlete, but the University of Oklahoma track runner said the concept is widely discussed on campus. “Being in college athletics, it’s a pretty talked about topic, just with the swimmer that’s come out,” said Gladd, referring to Lia Thomas, the University of Pennsylvania athlete who recently became the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming competition.

Finnish court acquits lawmaker in freedom of speech case HELSINKI – A Finnish court on Wednesday acquitted a Christian Democrat lawmaker and former interior minister of alleged incitement against gay people, in a case considered an important precedent on the limits of freedom of speech in the Nordic country. The Helsinki District Court said in its ruling that while some of the public statements by Paivi Rasanen, former leader of the small Christian Democratic Party, have been offensive to homosexuals they didn’t constitute hate speech and didn’t fall outside freedom of speech laws.

EU aims to discourage disposable fashion

BRUSSELS – The European Union warned consumers to stop using their clothes as throwaway items and said Wednesday that it plans to counter the use of mass-market fast fashion. New rules proposed by the EU’s executive arm call for a mandatory minimum use of recycled fibers by 2030 and would limit the destruction of unsold products.

Firm pays back Ohio over plant delays

CLEVELAND – The U.S. subsidiary of Thailand-based petrochemical giant PTT Global Chemical has repaid Ohio’s private economic development office $20 million after it failed to make an investment decision in 2020 on a proposed petrochemical plant in the state.
