ARDMORE - Orville Lavern Steele was born October 24, 1925 in the small town of Moorewood, Oklahoma to Georgia Tanner Barten Steele and Elmer Ezra Steele. When Orville was eight years old, his father died of Tuberculosis. He quit school at the end of the eighth grade to go to work and help support the family. He entered the Navy on February 5, 1944, and after boot camp at NTC San Diego was assigned to the escort carrier USS Fanshaw Bay (CVE-70) in the southern Pacific Ocean. While onboard, he manned an anti-aircraft gun, defending against Japanese attack. The day after turning 19, his task group,“Taffy 3,” composed of flagship Fanshaw Bay, five additional escort carriers, and an accompanying screen of three destroyers and four destroyer escorts, outfought, outwitted and outmaneuvered a powerful Japanese task force of battleships, cruisers and destroyers, known as the “Battle off Samar.” In recalling the incident, Orville said, “I thought I was going to die that day.”

Spring has finally arrived in Oklahoma MAYBE after the craziest weather imaginable this past year. Of course, we can say that every year; however, it was 80 degrees Christmas day, 80 degrees last Monday, and then 17 degrees with ice and sleet and horrifically cold north winds by Wednesday. We actually got a tiny bit of rain this past week but it has been an extremely dry, extremely cold winter, and those are the hardest conditions for plants. Even though daytime temperatures have been in the 40s quite a bit of the time, I have never seen so many nights that were in the 20s. Hopefully, we have seen the last cold front and spring really is almost here to stay.

Flashing lights on emergency vehicles, a Highway Patrol helicopter, work trucks, construction equipment, and even a feed truck filled the area behind the newest of the Elementary School buildings. Children walked from one professional to the next, exploring their vehicles—and their careers.

Ferrell lightens the mood for slumping Golden State Warriors Actor Will Ferrell took the floor and warmed up with the slumping Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night – maybe just what coach Steve Kerr’s team needed before facing the Los Angeles Clippers mired in a five-game losing streak. The comedy star donned a vintage-style headband and dressed in his Jackie Moon jersey from the 2008 hoops film Semi-Pro, a moment that was meant especially for Warriors guard Klay Thompson – who dressed as Moon for Halloween three years ago and loves the movie.

WASHINGTON – Legislation to limit insulin costs for people with diabetes is getting revived in the Senate. Democrats say they want to move quickly, but they’ll need Republican support to get anything through an evenly divided chamber – and they’re not there yet.
