Review: Grisham shortens things up in ‘Sparring Partners’

John Grisham is back, sort of. Fans waiting for his next full-length legal thriller will have to wait until the fall, but “Sparring Partners” serves up three novellas, the longest of which is 125 pages. They’re all about some aspect of the law — the people who practice it or the people who run afoul of it, writes Associated Press reviewer Rob Merrill. A favorite of the trio is “Strawberry Moon,” which introduces an inmate on the day he is scheduled to be executed. Grisham himself is an outspoken critic of the death penalty, but the story doesn’t take a strong stand.

Sale of long-lost ‘Wizard of Oz’ dress put on hold by judge

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has blocked the planned auction of one of the blue-and-white dresses Judy Garland wore as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” It was put up for sale by Catholic University of America after being rediscovered there in a shoebox during a renovation. The dress was given to a priest in the 1970s, and his niece has sued the school and the auctioneer, saying it belongs to her. A U.S. district judge granted a motion for a preliminary injunction Monday after a hearing in her lawsuit. The auctioneer listed a presale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million for the dress before it was withdrawn.

Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson departing from ‘SNL’

NEW YORK (AP) — Kate McKinnon and Pete Davidson are among those departing from “Saturday Night Live,” leaving the sketch institution without arguably its two most famous names after Saturday’s finale of its 47th season. Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney will also leave the cast after the episode hosted by Natasha Lyonne. The 38-year-old McKinnon won two Emmys in her 10 seasons on the show, during which her impressions included Hillary Clinton and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Her comic chops with characters frequently drove castmates and hosts to lose it live on air. The 28-year-old Davidson joined the cast in 2014 and has appeared in eight seasons.

Review: A joyous encounter between musical legends lives on

“Carry Me Home,” a newly-released recording of a memorable session between Mavis Staples and Levon Helm, pulsates with gusto and joy, writes Scott Stroud of The Associated Press. Recorded in front of an audience at Helm’s Woodstock, N.Y., studio in the summer of 2011, the pair rock their way through a 12-song set of soul, gospel and roadhouse blues. It’s reminiscent of Helm’s Grammy-winning “Ramble at the Ryman,” a live recording of a 2008 Nashville concert, but with one of the world’s great singers sitting in. It was the last encounter between them, as Helm would die after struggling with cancer within a year.
