That is a promise

During an argument in middle school a friend said he was going to beat me up, as teenage boys are prone to do. When I asked if he was making a threat, he replied “no, that is a promise.” He made it very clear with those words, the tone of his voice, and the look in his eye that he intended to follow through on his threat.

In recent years, satire and parody from comedy sites like The Onion and The Babylon Bee have proven to be prophetic, as many “jokes” later became true. Parody, satire, and old-fashioned comedy are now dangerous for many reasons. First, they may get you cancelled, and secondly, your silly joke may become reality.

August conversations with constituents

Although I was called back to Washington for a few days due to votes in the U.S. House of Representatives, I was still able to spend much of August in Oklahoma for the customary monthlong district work period. This extended time each year always provides the opportunity to interact directly with constituents and hear firsthand about the issues that matter most to them. In addition to traveling across the district to visit local communities, organizations and businesses as well as site tours and various coffees and lunches with community leaders, I hosted two telephone town halls, in which I provided an update from Congress and answered questions on a variety of national issues from those on the line. Throughout the month, several topics consistently came up in discussions.

New beau sets sleeping conditions for marriage

DEAR ABBY: About a year ago, I started a long-distance relationship with a widower. His wife died four years ago. He told me he slept on the couch a long time and got very little sleep after her death, because he couldn’t stand sleeping alone. He has two dogs and had never allowed them on the bed. He finally decided to try sleeping in the bed with the dogs, and was then able to sleep.
