Investing in our future: Advocating for stronger K-12 education

A thriving local economy depends on more than just recruiting new businesses or building new infrastructure. Recognizing that everything starts in our classrooms, the new Economic Vision Plan, developed in partnership with VisionFirst Advisors, has made K-12 education a central focus. This commitment is captured in Goal 5: Advocate for K-12 Education Improvements.

While education isn’t the primary mission of either the Ardmore Development Authority or the Chamber, both organizations are stepping up to serve as advocates and partners alongside school leaders, policymakers, and local employers. Together, as a community, we can help ensure students in Carter County’s nine school districts receive the high-quality education they need to succeed in life and in tomorrow’s workforce.

Why this matters:

Quality schools are a deciding factor for families choosing where to live and for businesses deciding where to invest. Unfortunately, state report cards show that many local districts face challenges in achievement and graduation rates. Rather than simply accepting this, the new Economic Vision Plan views it as a call to action.

What we plan to do:

The Economic Vision Plan outlines several specific steps the ADA and Chamber will take in collaboration with community partners:

  • Make education a permanent topic on board agendas, with yearly priorities for action.
  • Host regular roundtables that bring educators, business leaders, and policymakers together to tackle issues like funding, teacher recruitment, and curriculum alignment with local industries.
  • Champion an early literacy volunteer program to help students learn to read by third grade, a proven factor in boosting graduation rates.
  • Explore evidence-based programs for all early education, which have helped similar communities achieve strong reading outcomes.
  • Support the creation and growth of industry-based camps and career exploration activities to introduce students to local job opportunities.

Beyond the challenges:

While it’s important to address areas for improvement, we must also celebrate local successes. Each district has innovative programs, passionate educators, and determined students who are already making a difference. By sharing these stories, we can shift perceptions and inspire even greater community support.

At its core, Goal 5 reflects a shared belief: investing in education is investing in the future of Ardmore and Carter County. Through collaboration between businesses, educators, families, and other community groups and churches, we can build stronger schools, prepare students for the careers of tomorrow, and ensure our region’s long-term economic vitality.
