Though they may be relatively new, local band Blacktop Bloodlines is already making a splash in the music industry and recently received a nomination in the upcoming Josie Awards.
The Josie Awards was founded in 2015 with the goal of recognizing the creativity and talent within the independent music industry. Awards are given out for a wide range of musical styles with the winners being selected by a panel of music industry professionals. The award ceremony will take place at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Oct. 27.
Blacktop Bloodlines has been nominated for Country Group of the Year.
The band formed in 2023, consists of father and son Doug and Dylan Powell, of Ada, and Nonie Taliaferro of Lone Grove. The Powells selected the name because they come from a long line of truck drivers.
Taliaferro said they started playing together after meeting at a jam session at The Doghouse at Ole Red Tishomingo.
“They asked me if I wanted to play with them, and the rest is history,” she said. “I’ve really enjoyed working with these guys, and things have really come together for us. We all have a passion for writing and recording original music.”
Their first single, “Wild,” dropped at the beginning of the year, and it was followed up by “No One Knows Me.” They will be releasing their first album “UFOKIE” in January.
“The title track is a goofy little song about a UFO taking some rednecks back to space,” Taliaferro said. “But it’s a lot of fun. We’re going to be dropping a few singles off the album here in the next few months.”
She said the group was surprised to learn of their nomination, and they are extremely excited to attend the ceremony.
“We’ve got our tickets and our hotel all booked,” Taliaferro said. “I’m really excited to get all gussied up and walk the red carpet with so many other amazing artists. We’re all so ready to go!”
