Funeral services for Bessie Marie (Shelton) Elliott, 71, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday,  Jan. 19, 2016 in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory with Reverend Bill Freeman officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, with the assistance of family and friends serving as pallbearers.
The daughter of the late William Thomas “Babe” Shelton and Lillian (Collins) Shelton, Bessie was born on March 23, 1944 in Ardmore and passed away on Jan. 15, 2016 in a local nursing facility.
An Ardmore resident all of her life, Bessie graduated from Plainview High School, where she was a star on the girls basketball team. After graduating with the Class of 1962, she joined the ‘All American Redheads’, playing on their women’s professional basketball team. A traveling team, they only played against all men teams. This allowed her to visit all states except Hawaii and Alaska.
Later in life, Bessie, worked as a waitress at both the Coral and Hilltop restaurants. Bessie was a people person who enjoyed visiting and meeting people.
Bessie loved spending time with her three sons, Greg, Terry and Richard, she supported them at all there sporting events.
A pet lover, Bessie found time to quilt, spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as finding a good garage sale. She was a member of the Southwest Pentecostal Church of God.
Bessie is survived by her three sons: Greg McLaughlin and his wife, Sheila, Terry McLaughlin and Richard McLaughlin and his wife, Lauren; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Emogene Carter and Anna Belle Sheehy and her husband, Ray. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Woodrow, Wayne, Willie, W.T. “Dib”, Worley and Jesse; sisters, Izora, Leona, Betty Jo and Melma.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
