St. Patrick’s Day partiers are encouraged to call AAA’s free Tipsy Tow service today if they feel unsafe behind the wheel after celebrating the holiday.
The service is being offered from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Friday in Ardmore and several other Oklahoma cities including Tulsa, metro Oklahoma City, Lawton, Shawnee, Muskogee, Enid Tahlequah and Bartlesville.
AAA Oklahoma will give the caller, up to one more passenger, and the caller’s vehicle a free ride home, no questions asked.
“Over the five-day St. Patrick’s Day holiday period last year, the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office says 158 crashes involved alcohol or drugs,” said Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma. “During all of 2014, such crashes killed 151 and injured 1,598 in the state. Every time we climb behind the wheel after drinking, we’re rolling the dice.”
AAA encourages motorists to use designated drivers, call a cab, call Uber or Lyft, sleep over or make use of Tipsy Tow. The alternatives to driving while impaired are many and varied. No one ever needs to drive drunk.
Tipsy Tow is free to AAA members and nonmembers alike. The auto club will give up to two riders and the vehicle a ride home within a 15-mile radius of point of pickup. Call 1-800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) and say, “I need a Tipsy Tow.”
Although Tipsy Tow is offered by AAA in Oklahoma over major holidays and special events, it is not a nationwide program. If you plan to drive out of state, check with the local AAA club to see if it is available in that area.
