Ruby Lee Godwin Johnson Martin of Ardmore peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at the age of 87 years young.
Ruby was born Oct. 22, 1928, to J.P. and Mattie Godwin in Briggs, Texas, and raised in Ardmore. She was a graduate of Plainview High School in 1946 and then worked for the Carter County Court House for 21 years. Kendall Johnson and Ruby married in 1946 and were blessed with two sons, Kendall L. Johnson Jr. and Randall L. Johnson.
Ruby married Leonard Martin in 1966. They owned and operated Ardmore Furniture and Decorating for over 40 years. During retirement, Ruby and Leonard enjoyed traveling south as “Winter Texans.” They also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
Ruby loved everything about life. She was very caring and never forgot to say “I love you,” to everyone even if you were a complete stranger. Ruby loved to tell stories about the past while sitting under the shade tree outside her home. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing the piano, antique shopping, researching genealogy and spoiling all of her great and grandchildren. Ruby was a member of the Church of Christ on Merrick Drive. She was baptized in 1945 by Bro. George W. McCollum.
Ruby was preceded in death by her mother and father, J.P. and Mattie Godwin of Ardmore; her brothers, Robert Glen Godwin and Leonard Theron Godwin; sister, Delma Venetia Godwin; husband, Kendall L. Johnson Sr. and husband, Leonard A. Martin; and numerous nieces and nephew.
She is survived by her sons, Kendall L. Johnson Jr. and wife, Sherry, of Ardmore, Randall L. Johnson and wife, Cindy, of Ardmore, and Craig Lynn Martin of Oklahoma City; step-daughter, Phyllis Hill of Houston; grandchildren, Jason Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Micia Sampley and husband, Jason, Corey Johnson and wife, Lesley, of Ardmore, Miranda Dickinson and husband, John, of Stillwater, McKenna Martin, Hope Martin and Lily Martin, of Edmond, and Tony, Toya and Scott, of Texas; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today, in the Harvey-Douglas Centennial Chapel with Dr. Virgil Trout officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
