Oklahoma’s third annual Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge, spearheaded by OSU Coach Mike Gundy and OU Coach Bob Stoops in collaboration with state mentoring organizations and the Boren Mentoring Initiative, is a program of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. In 2014, 3,340 Oklahomans signed up to mentor, and in 2015 some 3,821 responded to the challenge. This year, organizers hope to build on that momentum by recruiting more than 4,000 mentors for Oklahoma youths.

The statewide campaign continues through Nov. 30 to encourage sports fans to mentor young people in their communities.Prospective volunteers can learn about mentoring opportunities in their community, and coaches can sign up to endorse the challenge at www.okcoacheschallenge.org. The website also provides promotional ideas and resources to help mentoring organizations recruit volunteers.

Area coaches who have endorsed the challenge include:

Joe Price, football coach, Plainview Public Schools

Montie Gaston, softball and basketball coach, Coleman Public Schools

Steve Day, football coach, Dickson High School

Brent Phelps, football, track coach, Fox Public Schools

Clayton Hodges, football and golf coach, Kingston Public Schools
