Johnny Joe “J. J.” Copeland, 81, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at his Mannsville residence. The son of the late George Oliver and Winnie Mae (Sanders) Copeland, J. J. was born Feb. 26, 1935 at Temple.
Of Baptist faith, J.J. was a longtime employee of the city of Ardmore. He had been a backhoe operator for the city cemetery and was a foreman at the City Water Department; he retired after thirty-four years of service. One of J. J.’s favorite times was when he was hunting and being outdoors.
J. J. and Gladys Ann Faulkner were married July 12, 1985, at Gainesville, Texas. They had been married twenty-seven years when Ann passed away Jan. 9, 2013.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Copeland; daughter, Debbie Bartels; step-daughter, Julie Vantine; grand-children, Riley, Jerry, Larry, Jessica, Chanda, Kim and John; step-grandchildren, Dillon, Katlin and Katrina; several great-grandchildren; also his brother, Felix Copeland and wife, Janice and his sisters, Peggy Graham and Nelda Brannock.
In addition to his parents, J. J. was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Scott Copeland; his late wife, Ann Faulkner Copeland, a son, Larry Copeland, and two sisters Georgie Hunt and Mary Smith.
A time of visitation and support for family and friends has been set from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Kevin Russell, pastor of the Mannsville Baptist Church.
Burial in Mannsville Cemetery will be with the assistance of Tommy Green, Luther Wooley, John Cody, Jerry Copeland, Larry Copeland and Dewayne Lee serving as pallbearers. Victor Copeland will serve as an honorary bearer.
