MARIETTA — Services to celebrate the life of Gerlando Everett Halstied are 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, in the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Gerlando was born in Ardmore to Wyvonne Jackson and Hayze Everett Halstied, Nov. 2, 1977. He and a friend’s lives were cut short by a bullet early Sunday morning, Sept. 18, 2016, as they communed in the breezeway of an apartment complex in Dallas.
Gerlando became known as Gerl at a young age, when he initially learned to write the first four letters of his name. He began early childhood in the Ardmore Headstart with his first teacher, Ms. Madonna Edwards, a most influential component of his formative years. He grew up in Marietta and progressed from kindergarten to the 11th grade at Marietta Schools. He was granted the opportunity to attend Basketball Camp in Norman with Reggie Anderson and Derick Halstied. This enhanced his confidence on the basketball court, and he became an outstanding player. Gerl earned his GED in 2000. His late maternal grandparents, Geraldine and Willard Jackson, and late paternal grandparents, Bessie and William ‘Bill’ Halstied, were staples in his life. At a young age, along with other youth at New Zion, Gerl accepted Christ and was baptized by the late pastor, the Rev. N.H. Lathen. Gerl became a member of the youth choir, but refused to sing until he had a robe. When asked to join the choir, he replied in his undeveloped speech, “No, you not supposed to sting in a tute.” Founded on this statement, the church purchased green robes with gold collars for the young youth choir. Gerl recently acquired a license to begin truck driving. Gerl married the former Latrisha ‘CoCo’ Piggee, Oct. 15, 2005. Two children, Gerriah Nikol and Gerlaysha Lanae, of Dallas were born to this union. Five other children, Gereall Ke’on, Ardmore, A’Darion Ellesse, Ardmore, Tavion DeQuan, Oklahoma City, Autumn CaPrial and Jaelyn Lanay, Ardmore; two  grandchildren, Aryion Monai and Paris NyKole, both of Ardmore. In addition, Gerl is survived by Deondra Bledsoe, Dallas; Ashley Enyart, Ardmore; six siblings and their spouses, Marco Jackson and Erica, Succentto and Lonnie ‘Pete’ Hennesy, Oklahoma City, Eulonda Petterson, Eric Halstied, Pittsburg, Calif., Tamla Wright, Tanis Wright, Ardmore, and Hayzetta Draper, Tulsa. Special people in his life include, Tiffany Jordan, Shemeka Booker, Jacquetta Banks, Basha Marshall and Yalisha Williamson; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends.
Honorary bearers are Kevin Halstied, Richie Coleman, Brent Coleman, Charlie Clark, and Monia Buchanan; bearers of the bier are Sha’Ron Fields, Carmell Houston, Cordell Hornbeak, Reggie Anderson, Derick Halstied and Shawn Jackson; flowers bearers are Latronda Lornes, Shalita Hennesy, Naomi Albert, Britney Harden and Olneshlia Bledsoe-Willis. Professional services are entrusted to the care of Kirk Funeral Home. Viewal will begin at 10 Friday morning in the chapel until 6 p.m., and at the New Zion Church at noon Saturday until services begin at 1 p.m.
