Ardmore police continue their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a shooting at an Ardmore apartment complex Friday evening, but the man identified as the “shooter” may be in the clear.
Officers responded to an apartment in the 800 block of M Street NW where Robert Meeker was found with a single gunshot wound to the chest. Meeker, 51, was taken to Mercy Hospital Ardmore and later airlifted to a Dallas hospital.
Meanwhile, investigators interviewed two eye-witnesses and Richard Johnston, 57, who was identified as the man who fired the .22 caliber handgun at Meeker. Shortly before 11 p.m. Sgt. Brice Woolly, APD Criminal Investigations Division who leads the investigation, confirmed Johnston had been released pending further investigation.
Woolly said the preliminary inquiry showed police had responded to an altercation between Meeker and Johnston Thursday which is suspected to have sparked Meeker going to Johnston’s apartment Friday where the shooting occurred.
Woolly told The Ardmoreite, Saturday, “There is a lot more investigation to be done on this before it will be ready for review by the DA. At this time there is the possibility Mr. Johnston felt threatened by Mr. Meeker and shot him in self-defense.
“However, we have yet to talk with Mr. Meeker. We do know from speaking with the hospital his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. We still have a lot of learn about this case.”
Court records show Johnston has no previous criminal record.
