A 38-year-old  man who entered a plea last month in a case charging him with multiple counts of possession of child pornography announced Wednesday he will seek to withdraw his earlier claim.
Timothy McGaughy appeared before District Judge Dennis Morris in Carter County District Court. The Wilson man had told Morris he was pleading no contest to two of the charges in a court session Feb. 3. The judge accepted the pleas as guilty, setting formal sentencing for Wednesday.
But when McGaughy found out he was sentenced to 20 years, with five years suspended and 15 years to serve in a state prison, he apparently had a change of heart. He announced he would seek to withdraw his plea. Minutes later he was escorted from the courtroom to the Carter County Detention Center.
Whether McGaughy will actually file documentation in court seeking another chance at a jury trial remains unknown.
He was arrested by Wilson police and charged May 13. The case accuses him of having multiple pornographic photos of minors under the age of 18. Each of the 22 charges filed against him carries a potential sentence of not more than 20 years and/or fines of $25,000 each.
