Services for John Edward Pirtle, 73, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Corinth Baptist with Rev. Abraham Walton officiating. Interment will follow at Wiley Cemetery in Johnston County.
Born July 21, 1944 in Ardmore, Okla., to John and Ella Gordon Pirtle, John passed on Monday,  Oct. 9, 2017 following an extensive illness. He was an active member of Corinth Baptist Church in Ardmore.
Raised in Ardmore, John attended Dunbar Elementary and Douglass High School. He finished his senior year of high school at Milburn High School in Milburn, Okla.. He graduated in 1963.
‘Big John’ as he was affectionately known by many, loved sports. He played basketball at Murray State College. He then went on to Hillsborough Community College where he played baseball and earned his associate’s degree.
John and the former Eurgin Mae Griffin were married on April 19, 1969 in Ardmore, Okla.
He left college and joined the United States Air Force and served until 1969. John loved serving his country so much he joined the United States Army Reserves shortly after and served more than 20 years. He retired as a Sergeant First Class.
He went to work for OG&E and was with the company for more than 30 years. After he retired from OG&E, John went to work at the Ardmore Veterans Center until his health forced him to retire in 2003.
John was a conversationalist. He never met a stranger and he loved the outdoors, be it hunting, golfing, fishing or just tinkering in the garage. He enjoyed singing in the men’s choir at Corinth.
John leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Eurgin Mae of the home, son, Alvarez Quince Pirtle and his wife LeeAnn; daughter Andrea Pirtle Perry; grandchildren, Brittney Stradone and her wife Amy; Lakendria Williams and her husband Scott; Shawndrea Willis and her husband Ron; Quintn Pirtle, Amie Perry, Ashdon Perry and Alex Perry; great-grandchildren Wesley Williams, Jayden Williams and Crosby Stradone; Brothers, Winston Durrell Pirtle and Don Pirtle; Sisters, Wallicia Turner and Sherri Pirtle.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, Floyd Vernon Pirtle; sisters, Ella Cox, Paula Davis and Diane Allen; great-granddaughters Addison and Avery Willis.
A 32nd Degree Mason, John served as the secretary of the Sunset Lodge #85 in Ardmore and was very committed to the organization.
Pallbearers will be the men of the Sunset Lodge #85, honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Corinth Baptist Church Brotherhood and flower bearers will be the Women of the Douglass Alumni.
