Born to Merlie Lee Jones Sr. and Gipsy (Newton) Jones on May 29, 1956, in Los Angeles and went to be with his Heavenly Father on Dec. 11, 2017, passing away at the age of 61 years, 6 months and 12 days.
Merlie, who was often referred to as “Uncle Jr.” and “Sarge” to many that knew him, was raised in California. He received his education and other training there and often spoke of his love for the city in which he was raised.
Merlie decided that he would enter the military at an early age and in September 1973 he joined the U. S. Army and served active duty as a merchant maintenance helper. Merlie would complete active duty service in December 1975 with an honorable discharge as a private. He would be awarded the National Defense Service Medal along with many other distinguished honors as a serviceman. Merlie was a proud veteran and loved to share his stories of the military whenever he had the opportunity. Merlie could be seen at any time ordering his younger nieces and nephews around and telling them, “Hey, kiddo, straighten up and fly right.” This is just one of the sayings that he would mouth off; he enjoyed joking around and ordering others around too. He was always excited to remind one of his nieces how he was the oldest. This was a huge joke amongst the family.
Merlie became a resident of Ardmore, Okla., in the late 1990s. He needed a change from the city that he loved so well and this also gave him time to spend more time with his Oklahoma family.
Merlie leaves to cherish his memories and many stories: sister, Ida Faye Brooks; special cousin who was like a sister to Merlie, Demetrius (Harvey) Holt of Compton, Calif.; cousins, Velenda Schlosser and Patricia Rollerson both of Englewood, Calif.; and nieces, Phyllis Clark and Colleen Lewis both of Ardmore, Okla. Merlie has a host of generations of great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews. Merlie is preceded in death by his parents and a stepmother that raised him, Mrs. Jean Jones; a sister, Gwendolyn Jones-Roberts; brother, Bobby Johnson; aunts, Lavada Jackson and Laura Harrison; and maternal uncles, Trolie Jones and Merlie Jones.
