Funeral services for Donald Leslie Peavler will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home with Chaplain Matt Benedick officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U. S. Army.
The son of the late Noel Peavler and Doris Lee (Sidwell) Peavler, Donald was born on Aug. 11, 1945, at Princeton, Kentucky. A resident of Ardmore most of his life, Donald had attended school in Velma, Okla. He and the former Belinda Mahan were married Oct. 6, 1990, in Whitesboro, Texas, and made their home in Ardmore.
An American hero, Donald proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. An expert rifleman and a Light Weapons Infantryman, Donald saw action in Vietnam during the Vietnam Counter Offensive and the TET Offensive Campaign. He was wounded in action, and for his service, was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, with 60 Device; the Combat Infantryman’s Badge; the Purple Heart with first and second Oak Leaf Clusters; and four Overseas Bars. He also was stationed in Germany.
Following his military service, Donald had worked as an over-the-road truck driver and in the maintenance department of Lake Murray State Park. During his leisure time he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
As Donald’s health declined, he became a patient at the Ardmore Veterans Center Health Facility. He passed away there on Jan. 7, 2018, at the age of 72 years, four months and 26 days.
Survivors include his wife, Belinda Peavler; daughters, Michelle Blakemore and husband, Clint, Mary Evens, Christie Johnson and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Curtis Hemminger, Amber Hemminger, Coby Hunter, Takoda Johnson, Breanna Steudeman, John Johnson, Cameron Kyle, Curtis Kyle, Mikaela Blakemore and Ryan Blakemore; and three brothers, Ronnie Peavler, Rick Stone and Mike Stone. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by a grandson, J.T. Hemminger; a granddaughter, Rayshell Hunter; a nephew, Christopher Matson; and sisters, Deanna Lee Wells and Donna Kelly.
Pallbearers include Curtis Kyle, Coby Hunter, Cameron Kyle, James Mahan, John Johnson, Ryan Blakemore, Takoda Johnson and Curtis Hemminger.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers that donations may be made at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home to assist with final expenses.
