Daughter of the late Robert Smith and Margery (Ryan) Smith, Georgia was born July 21, 1931, in New York City. She grew up in Wakefield, Mass., and New Rochelle, N.Y., where she attended and graduated from St. Gabriel High School then went on to graduate from the College of New Rochelle.
Georgia and Charles Smith Tanner were married Feb. 2, 1957, at New Rochelle, N.Y. They were the parents of four children, Susan, Charles Jr., Lauren and Andrew. The family moved to Ardmore 47 years ago from Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.
Once in Ardmore, the family quickly became active in community affairs. Members of St. Mary Catholic Church, Georgia was a religious education teacher and member of St. Mary’s Women’s Group. Family life centered around sailing, swimming, tennis and camping. A person of faith, Georgia lived life serving others.
A kind and gentle person who loved spending time with family and friends, Georgia was a founding member of the Ardmore Literacy Council and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Ardmore Library (during its new construction). She was a tutor in English as a Second Language (ESL) literacy classes, was active in the Republican Women’s group and was a member of Ladies of the Leaf from 1975 until 2016, when she became an honorary member. In her leisure time, Georgia was an enthusiastic participant of Bridge and Mah Jong.
In retirement, Georgia and Charlie traveled extensively, with Mexico and Europe being favorite destinations; but at the end of each trip both looked forward to returning to Ardmore, their adopted home town. A highlight of each week was getting together with the Friday Night Group of Friends.
Following a time of failing health, Georgia passed from life to life-everlasting Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at her Ardmore residence.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles Tanner of the home; her children, Dr. Susan Wingo and husband, Dale, of Amarillo, Texas; Charles S. Tanner Jr. and wife, Susan, of Edmond; Lauren Ellis of Pauls Valley; and Andrew Tanner and wife, Yolanda, of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Rick Wingo; Kristin Wingo; Sarah Ratcliff and husband, Ryan; Jordan Tanner and wife, Erin; Erin Hutson and husband, Hutt; Gavin Featherston; Taylor Charlson and husband, Matt; Ryan Ellis and wife, Andrea; John Tanner; Leah Tanner; Colin Tanner; and Samantha Tanner; and great-grandchildren, Beckett Ratcliff, Troy Tanner, Titus Tanner, Bowen Hutson, Wyatt Ellis, Vada Charlson and Adelyn Charlson.
Georgia’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life. The legacy of her kind spirit, passion for sports, love of reading and zest for life will live on through them.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the building fund of St. Mary Catholic Church.
