HEALDTON — In a championship setting, sometimes you can only come back so many times.

Unfortunately, the Healdton Lady Bulldogs weren’t able to find enough formulas to solve Wynnewood Saturday night.

The Lady Savages used a strong fourth quarter performance to pull away from the Lady Bulldogs, winning the Bulldog Bash girls title 48-38 at Healdton High School.

“We talked about keeping intensity,” Healdton coach Mike Phillips said. “I wanted us to move to controlling the inside a little more, and unfortunately it lead to the outside being open more. Miah Smith made some big shots for them in the fourth quarter.”

Healdton came out swinging in the first quarter, grabbing its first lead of the game at 7-5, with 3:31 left in the first.

The Lady Bulldogs eventually ended the frame on a 7-3 run, leading 14-8 going into the second.

However, the momentum was quickly about to shift.

Wynnewood slowly chipped away at the Lady Bulldogs lead, eventually grabbing its own lead back at 18-17 with 1:37 remaining before halftime.

The Lady Savages led 20-17 going into the break.

“I told the girls that we had to respond after the second quarter,” Phillips said. “We had two trips in the second quarter where we turned the ball over twice. I thought we worked the ball better in the third quarter and got more wide open shots.”

Healdton’s strategy paid off as the Lady Bulldogs clawed their way back from a 24-17 deficit, managing to get to within one at 31-30 going into the fourth, just moments after tying the game at 30-30.

But in the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs didn’t score their first basket until the 4:04 mark, and by then the Lady Savages were out in front 38-31.

Wynnewood finished the game off on a 10-7 run.

Macey Howell led Healdton (11-6) with 15 points followed by Torree Wingo with 11 points. Maddie Bradberry and Mayson Sullivan each scored four points.

Healdton will be at Ringling Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m followed by a road game Thursday night against Fox.
