While a burn ban is in effect in Carter and many adjacent counties this week, fires continue to pop up throughout the region.
A Carter County District I employee was mowing on Mary Niblack Road between Highway 70 and McClain Road yesterday when he said he heard a loud boom and then saw fire. Aaron Miller said he ran to beat on the door of the endangered home where an elderly couple was inside.
“They were really scared,” he said.
Miller helped emergency services agencies by directing traffic away from the area.
The fire began just after 3 p.m. and continued to spread for more than an hour. Ardmore and Dickson Fire Departments were among those who responded. Miller said an OG&E crew also came to the scene to assist.
Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant confirmed the fire had been contained.
“There was one structure, a house, and a vehicle involved,” Bryant said. “There were no fatalities that I am aware of.”
While the fire was contained, the area remained smoky for several hours.
