George Bates Jr., was born on Dec. 29, 1950, in Grady, Ark., to the late George Bates Sr., and LeDora Bates. A home-going service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Trinity Baptist Church in Ardmore.
Brother George Bates Jr., accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and became a minister in 1977. George was a loyal and faithful member of Children of the King Church until our Heavenly Father called him home. He proudly enlisted into the United States Army in December 1970 and trained as a field wireman communication specialist.
George never met a stranger that he didn’t share a smile with; he was the bond to his loving family, implanted his love, strength and his determination in all of us. He was a man who loved fishing, gardening, Western movies, reading the daily paper, watching “Wheel of Fortune,” the Kentucky Derby and his all-time favorite Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, play.
Brother Bates placed God first and foremost every day of his life. He taught his children that everything with God is possible. He raised them to know God, to respect God, to honor God and always give Him the glory. As George would say, “In order to understand where you’re going, you must know where you come from; respect who helped you, love who is still with you and pray for who is against you.”
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Bates Sr., and LeDora Bates and four sisters, Dorothy Bates, Eloise Howard, Earnestine Eason and Betty Jean Bates.
On Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, in the early morning hours, the sun set on his life on earth and he laid down his old house of clay. He leaves to forever cherish his memory, a long-time mate and best friend, Margaret Roberts of Ardmore; four unconditional, loving children, Derrick Bates, George (Shane) Bates III and Tanisha Bogard (Randy), all of Little Rock, Ark., and Mauchella Bates (Emmaly) of Morrilton, Ark.; seven siblings, Rosie Lee Addison, Mary Ann Young, Josephine Bates, Leonard Bates (CaBerta), Sally Ann Smith, Thomas Bates and Patsy Bates; nine grandchildren, Dreshun Toney, Alaysha Bates, Devyn Bates, Nyla Bogard, Gabrielle Bates, Lanaeja Burrell, Maggie Stacy, Randy Bogard Jr., and Caled Stacy; and one great-grandchild, Kaylon (King) Felder Jr.
George also had other children and grandchildren that he loved dearly, Corey Toney of Conway, Ark., Shantay Mayfield (Byron), Robert Roberts (LaKisha), Monica Chatman (Mario), Lyric Mayfield, Brooklynn Chatman and Ryan Roberts. George Bates Jr., leaves a host of family members and dear friends that will forever cherish his smile and heart of gold.
Services are under the care and direction of Grant & Owens Mortuary.
