DUNBAR — Family and friends will celebrate the life of Marqueta Gaines at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2018, in Nazarene Baptist Church. Her nephew, the Rev. Charles Franklin, will officiate, and her Pastor, the Rev. Eugene Bellard will present the eulogy. Interment will follow in Dunbar Cemetery.
Marqueta was born Oct. 19, 1933, to Clarence and Minnie Anderson in the Dunbar Community. She attended Dunbar School and Douglass High School. She and Melroy Gaines were married July 15, 1953. He preceded her in death April 7, 2007, following 54 years of marriage. The couple continued to reside in the Dunbar Community. In 2008, following his death, she made her home in Marietta.
Marqueta was employed on several jobs before retiring as a chef from the Lake Country Nursing Center. She worked several years at Dunbar School, Marietta’s Pants Factory and in domestics for many families. She was a magnificent cook. Each of her five children brag about her fried chicken, fried apricot pies, coconut cream pies and German chocolate cake.
Marqueta was a lifelong member of Nazarene Baptist Church. She ministered with the ushers, women mission and the kitchen staff. She became a resident in Lake Country Nursing Center in April 2017. From this facility, her soul took flight Tuesday, March 13, 2018.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 54 years; four sisters, Billie Glover, Maxine Franklin, Clarissa King and Helen Anderson; six brothers, Thomas Anderson, Harding Anderson, Alchester Anderson, Clarence Anderson, Ray Anderson and Truman Anderson.
She leaves to forever cherish precious memories two sisters, Willie C. Woodson and Mae Lois Fuller; two sons, Larry Gaines and Roy Gaines; three daughters, Joyce Gooden, Marneta Dorsey and Debra Gaines; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and numerous friends.
Viewing will be between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Friday. Services are entrusted to the care of Kirk Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to kirkfuneralhome@cableone.net.
