Paul Dane King, 86, of Gene Autry, Okla., passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Ardmore, Okla. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018, in the Craddock Memorial Chapel, 525 S. Commerce Street Ardmore with the Rev. Frank Young officiating.
He was born at Lone Grove, Okla., on Sat., March 19, 1932. Paul was the youngest of Lannie D. King and Opel (Kinechole) King. A graduate of Lone Grove High School, Paul was employed by Button’s Electrical in Ardmore before enlisting in the Navy in 1951. There he became an Electrician Mate Class “A” in electronics. He served his country on the following ships: USS Bradford (DD-545), USS Blue (DD-744), USS Intrepid (CV-11) and Providence (CLG-6) leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge in 1961.
Upon return home from the Navy, he worked for Aero Commander in Oklahoma City, Lear Siegler at Ardmore Air Park, and at the U.S. Postal Office in Ardmore, Okla., where he retired with 20 years of service.
Paul was an independent person always telling you what he thought and how the world should be run. He was an outdoorsman at his “Beachnut Bottom” home. He liked to hunt quail and pheasant, and trap and shoot wild hogs with his dog, Taz, the terror of Beachnut Bottom. He was an avid “noodle” of catfish in the Washita River and liked to teach others the knack of catching catfish by hand. Paul liked to garden and gather pecans; cracking and shelling as many as 400 pounds each winter. Never married, Paul chose Otis and Nola Jackson as his second parents; they were a great influence on his life. On Veterans Day, Paul placed flags at the graves of many Carter County Veterans.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Lannie and Opel King, two brothers, Dell and Charles King.
Survivors include nieces Carolyn Dees and husband Brian, JoAnn Smithers and husband Dale, Tonya Brown and husband Kris; nephews Herman King and wife Debbie, Johnny Knapp, Jim Garner and wife Donna and cousin Earletta Payne and husband Bill and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins; special friends Robert Rabe, “Huck” Means, Tony Bartee, Don Mitchell, Frank Waites, Ernest Woodward, Rodger Atnip, Perry Allen, Shawn Walker, Matt Betterton, Bernie and Darlene Conway, Elvin and Flo Sewwten, Mark and Vickie Crawley, and numerous Navy and Southern Oklahoma Friends.
