Kids Day in the Park was canceled due to inclement weather, but some of the festivities planned have been rescheduled at a new event.
Southern Oklahoma Ambulance Service stepped in and organized Carter County Safety Day, which is slated for next Saturday, Assistant Director of Operations Bill Jones said
“In lieu of Kids Day in the Park, we got together with some of the other agencies that were going to be there,” Jones said. “We decided to have a safety day because a lot of the people who were supposed to be at Kids Day have to do with safety.
Parks and Recreation donated the space. Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Air Evac 130 plan to bring helicopters, while first responders will bring trucks so kids can have an up-close look at the vehicles.
The event will have face-painting, bounce houses, and a live DJ along with services like finger printing for kids and a prescription drug take-back booth. Chris Young, with Young Guns Mobile Music, has volunteered his services for the event. SOAS also plans to give away 200 bicycle helmets at the event.
Ardmore Fire Department will  bring a fake house with fake flames. Kids will be able to take turns using hoses to put out the fire. Heroes with Hope, Ardmore Police Department and the Carter County Sheriff’s Department all plan to attend.
“We always love doing Kids Day, and it was really disappointing, especially knowing what The Children’s Shelter went through to put it on, but we were glad we could do this,” Jones said.
Jones said the company is still spreading the word, and more organizations may join in before the event next week.
Safety Day will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 19 at Ardmore Regional Park. The Children’s Shelter will be selling hot dogs.
