Services to celebrate the life of Jerry David Flanagan of Ardmore, Okla., are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018, in First Baptist Church – Ardmore with Dr. Alton Fannin officiating. Military honors will follow conducted by a nine-man team in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, Okla. Services are under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Marietta.
The son of W.L. Flanagan, Sr. and Emma Margaret Ann Colston Flanagan, Jerry was born at Oswalt, Okla., on Dec. 16, 1925. He passed away Wednesday, May 23, in the Oklahoma Veterans Center – Ardmore at the age of 92.
Jerry attended Greenville School through 5th  grade, then Meadowbrook School through 8th grade and graduated from Marietta High School with the class of 1944. He and Barbara Jean Drennen were married in Miles City, Montana, on May 3, 1953, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 2012. During his more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, Jerry served overseas in Japan, two tours of duty in Korea, Iran, India, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. He was awarded numerous commendations including the National Defense Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Good Conduct Medal with Third Award, Army Commendation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and United Nations Service Medal. Following his retirement from the Army, in 1975 the couple returned to Ardmore to make their home and Jerry served as a veterans representative for the Oklahoma Employment Service for 10 years. As a very active member of Ardmore’s First Baptist Church, he was a deacon, member of the Senior Adult IV Department Sunday School Class as well as a member of the church choir often singing solos and with a quartet. In addition, Jerry served as a Gideon for more than 20 years. His hobbies included his daily bible study/devotion time, gardening, crossword puzzles, and working in his yard.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; son, Jerry Michael Flanagan on Dec. 22, 2006; and brothers, W.L. Flanagan, Jr. and Curtis Flanagan.
Survivors include two sons, David Flanagan and wife Carolyn of Ada and Dennis Flanagan and wife Amy of Ardmore; brother, E. Don Flanagan and wife Paula, also of Ardmore; sister, Louise Howe of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren, Jennifer Colley, Adam Flanagan, Steven Flanagan, Michael Flanagan, Caleb Mason, and Darcy Mason; and eight great-grandchildren, Keaton, Haddie, Carson, Kendra, Benjamin, Quinn, Michael Jr., and Elizabeth.
Serving as casket bearers will be David Flanagan, Dennis Flanagan, Paul Colley, Adam Flanagan, Steven Flanagan, and Michael Flanagan. Honorary bearers are members of the Senior Adult IV Department Sunday School Class of Ardmore’s First Baptist Church.
Time of visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at Ardmore’s First Baptist Church.
