Though it’s moved since its opening, Ardmore’s JCPenney location will celebrate its 100 year anniversary on Friday morning.
The store will celebrate the occasion with giveaways, a raffle, and a cake topped with 100 candles at the store entrance inside the mall. As part of the celebration, General Manager Mike Chisolm will present the Ardmore YMCA with a $1,500 donation.
“I’m from North Carolina, and where I grew up I always went to the YMCA every summer,” Chisolm said. “That was always memorable to me.”
JCPenney opened downtown in Ardmore in 1918, but the original building burned down in a fire that destroyed several businesses in 1977. The store was split between two locations while the Commerce Street building was being built. The new building opened for business in 1980 in what was then called Mountain View Mall.
“This is sort of new as a company,” Chisolm said. “This year, we’re one of seven stores celebrating a 100 year anniversary.”
Customers can also enter a raffle for a KitchenAid stand mixer.
The ceremony will start at 9:30 a.m. and giveaways will start at 10 a.m. The first 100 customers in line will receive coupons and free sample bags from the JCPenney Salon.
