Scam calls requesting money sent via wire transfer services like Western Union are not a new tactic.
Some have been on the receiving end of those calls locally for a new purpose, according to Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant.
Reports have been made to CCSO of callers allegedly posing as deputies or detention officers telling people they must send funds by Western Union in order to stay out of jail, Bryant said.
Anyone receiving such calls should report the incident to local law enforcement or the Sheriff's office.
Bryant said more information on the issue will be available soon.
