The Chickasaw Nation will soon be adding a welcome addition to it’s Ardmore Campus, a brand new gym. Members of the tribe met on Thursday afternoon to officially break ground on the new facility.
The gym will actually be the second gym the tribe has built in Ardmore. The first gym was part of Carter Seminary, but was lost to the renovation process after Carter Seminary was closed and converted into the community center.
“We renovated it for a community center because we really needed an updated space,” said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby.  “When we did, the gymnasium no longer existed. We knew at the time that we needed to build one, but we found out right away that the folks around here really enjoyed utilizing the gym at the Carter Campus.”
“The people in this area have been waiting very patiently for us to replace the gymnasium that was there,” Anaotubby said. “I know that the legislators in this district have heard about it, I have heard about it, and we as elected officials who serve our people listened. That’s what it’s about. We listened to what the people want and so today we’re breaking ground on that new gymnasium.”
The new gym will be located at 2225 Robinson St. N.W and will be approximately 15,300 square feet. It will include a regulation-size basketball court, bleachers for over 460 spectators, locker rooms, a lobby, and a concession area.
“We’re just excited to do something that’s meeting the needs of our people,” Anaotubby said. “It’s meeting our mission statement to enhance the overall quality of life for the Chickasaw People.”
