While the postseason is out of the realm of possibilities this season for the Lone Grove Longhorns, they might still have a say in who makes it to the playoffs out of district 3A-2.

At 7 p.m. tonight at Longhorn Stadium, Lone Grove will take on the Purcell Dragons, in a game which carries a lot of playoff weight as it pertains to the district standings.

A victory by the Longhorns (1-7, 1-4) would severely damage the Dragons playoff chances as they would drop to 3-3 in district play and 5-4 overall with one game remaining next week against Marlow.

Lone Grove coach Brad O’Steen has been emphasizing to his team how important these last two games are as it pertains to building for the future of the program.

“We just need to keep working everyday and working on basic fundamentals,” He said. “We need to show up everyday with a good attitude and good work ethic, get better and work for the future.”

Last week the Longhorns struggled on both sides of the ball in a blowout 49-6 defeat against the Plainview Indians.

This week will present another tough challenge as the Longhorns will face a Dragons team on a three game winning streak, who hasn’t lost a road game since September against Sulphur, and is 3-1 overall away from home this season.

Purcell is also averaging just 24 points allowed on the road this season.

Coach Brad O’Steen knows how tough this season has been, and is hoping to use the last two games of the year to help continue to grow as a team.

One of the keys O’Steen said for his team is going to be how well they can perform the fundamentals and execute on both sides of the ball.

“We need to block better and move the chains,” he said. “Finishing drives is going to go a long way for us this week.”

A piece of good news for the Longhorns this week will be the return of sophomore running back Justin Barnes.

“As of right now, he will be in the rotation,” O’steen said. “He is probably the fastest kid we got, and that sure will help with that speed.”

Lone Grove finishes the season next week on the road against the Bethel Wildcats.
