Healdton is in for a bright night when kids go Christmas shopping next month.
Shine the Light, a charity drive in Healdton for kids in need, is slated for December 10. The event, a collaboration between First Bank & Trust and Healdton’s fire and police departments and the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, began eight years ago.
Cindy Morgan, who organizes the event every year, said the event started when an
anonymous person, still only known as Healdton’s personal secret Santa, walked into First Bank & Trust in Healdton and proposed the idea.

“That person’s goal was to do something specifically for those less fortunate,” Morgan said. “They just didn’t want to be named.”

Anyone 18 and under can be included, but school-age children need to be enrolled. Applications are available at First Bank & Trust and can be turned in until December 6. Morgan said the event is funded through donations every year.

“We’re working every year,” Morgan said. “Every year, we have a good turnout.”

The shopping begins at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Healdton Police Department. Kids get to ride fire trucks or police cars to local stores and the Healdton Family Center to pick out gifts.

“We focus on western Carter County and Jefferson County because there’s not much out this way. Every year we have a different amount,” Morgan said. “Our first year we only had 18 or 19. Last year, we had 55.”

Morgan said that kids who participate are usually from Wilson, Fox, Ratliff City, Graham and Ringling.

“As long as the need is there, we’re going to try to help the families.”
