MARIETTA — Services for MSG Phillip R. McGinnis Sr., 81, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, in the Chapel of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. Sharen Hale of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ardmore under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Born Nov. 29, 1936, at New Castle, Ind., to Fred McGinnis and Ercelle Hedrick McGinnis, Phillip passed away at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at his residence in the Enville community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin; youngest sister, Adrienne; his father-in-law, Dale W. Goodin; his mother-in-law, Laura Belle Kouns Goodin; three brothers-in-law, William E. and Thomas J. Goodin, and Richard G. Jackson; and his great-grandchild, Kaydence Elizabeth Martin.   
Raised in New Castle, Ind., Phillip enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from High School and served 23 years on active duty.
He and Cecile Yvone Goodin married on Aug.15, 1958, in Ardmore, had three sons and enjoyed life and travel.
His overseas tours took him to Iceland and Japan, (where his first and second sons were born), Thailand, and Sergeant McGinnis was a five-time Vietnam veteran. He also had stateside tours in San Antonio, Ardmore, Amarillo, Mojave Desert, Albuquerque, and Oklahoma City. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 oak leaf clusters and V-device for valor, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal with two bronze loops, the National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Small Arms Expert Marksman Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 60 device, before retiring as a Master Sergeant.
After leaving the Air Force, he became a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in the Ardmore Post Office for 14 years, before becoming self-employed and semi-retired while owning-operating a convenience store in Marietta. He was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Love County Senior Program serving as co-editor of the Busy Senior News.
MSG McGinnis is survived by his wife Yvone, of Marietta; two sons, Phillip Jr. and wife Barbara of Ardmore and Colin and wife Lori, of Franklin, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Bill, Eric, Ryan, Matt, Josh and Kaitlyn McGinnis; three great-grandsons, Braiden and Dillon Martin, and Daniel Liam McGinnis; one brother, Charles and wife Wanda, of Indiana; two sisters, Dolores Seigler, of Florida., and Sheila Jackson of Indiana; a brother-in-law, Dale W. Goodin II of Honolulu, Hi.; and many nieces and nephews.
Bearers will be sons, Phillip Jr. and Colin McGinnis; and grandsons, Bill, Eric, Ryan, and Matt McGinnis.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, at the funeral home.
