It is with great sadness that the family of (Patricia) Lyn Fene announces her passing on Nov. 14, 2018, at the age of 84. Lyn was preceded in death this year by her husband of nearly 60 years, William R. Fene. Lyn will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Rolfe and Jeff Fene, her daughter Andrea Holmes, and her four grandchildren Evan, Brett and Regan Fene, and Luke Bullock.
Born in Oklahoma City, Lyn grew up in Ardmore. Lyn attended the University of Oklahoma where she earned a degree in journalism and was a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was recognized as a Big Woman on Campus. After college, Lyn and her friend, Rue McClanahan of future Golden Girls fame, moved to New York City to pursue her journalism career while Rue pursued acting. She and Lyn remained lifelong friends.
Lyn returned to Oklahoma and went to work at the Lawton Constitution where she met her husband Dick, who was a U.S. Army Officer stationed at Fort Sill. Lyn was an ambitious and talented print journalist, busting through the glass ceiling of the 1950’s career woman. She shelved her career for many years as she raised her family and relocated with Dick’s military career.
After Dick retired from the military, the family moved to Durant where Lyn became News Editor at the Durant Daily Democrat. Lyn won the prestigious United Press International Peabody Award for her work during her time at the paper and was well known for her skilled writing and journalistic integrity.
Lyn loved European travel, reading and writing and was a tenacious CASA volunteer advocate. The family requests that donations be made in Lyn’s name to the National CASA Association. A memorial service for Lyn will be held at Holmes, Coffey, Murray Funeral Home in Durant at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018. Family Hour will be held that morning at 10 a.m.
