WILSON — Three was the magic number on Thursday for Ringling basketball teams.

On the opening day of the Black and Gold Classic at Wilson High School, both the Blue Devils and the Lady Blue Devils won their third game of the season.

Both teams will be in action this evening beginning at 4 p.m. for the girls semifinals and 5:30 p.m. for the boys semifinals.

It wasn’t easy, but the Lady Blue Devils          managed to hold off a stiff challenge in their opening contest.

From the opening tip, the game was a constant back and forth match up. Both teams were tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter. 

The second quarter was another tight fair, but the Lady Blue Devils took the half time lead 22-19 behind an offensive explosion by Mariah Martin, who scored five of her 16 points in the second quarter.

In the third, the Lady Blue Devils began to pull away, outscoring the Lady Badgers 16-7 behind Martin’s seven point outburst. Martin hit all three of her free throw attempts in the third, and was 6-of-7 shooting for the game.

Ringling managed to hold off a late rally in the fourth to seal the victory.

Mariah Martin led the Lady Blue Devils with 16 points in the game, with Rayme Tolliver scoring eight points. 

Ringling will take on Thackerville in the semifinals.

There was little drama in the boys contest, as the Blue Devils cruised to a comfortable victory against Temple in the opening round.

Caige Clavert led the way for the Blue Devils with 13 points in the game. 

At the end of the first quarter, Ringling held a 17-10 advantage, before Ringling blanked Temple in the second to lead 42-10 going into the locker room after a 25-0 run.

Ringling kept up its momentum down the stretch in the third as the Blue Devils outscored the Tigers 16-2, before the Blue Devils were outscored in the fourth 16-8.
