A Carter County man died after attempting to swallow alleged contraband in front of police.

Wilson Police officers were booking Scott Lee Pumphrey, 40, into the Lone Grove Police Jail. Pumphrey had Wilson city warrants for driving under suspension and with expired tags.
During the booking process, a bag hit the ground, and officers said Pumphrey grabbed the bag and swallowed it. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation supervisor Steve Tanner said it’s not clear what was in the bag.

“We don’t make guesses,” Tanner said. “We don’t even know what caused his death, it could have been an overdose or suffocation.”

Pumphrey allegedly tried to escape after swallowing the bag, but was detained and soon thereafter began to turn purple. Officers called paramedics, who attempted CPR, before transporting Pumphrey to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore where he was pronounced dead.
