Longtime Ardmore resident, Betty Lou (Lucy) Watterson, 89, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, in a local nursing facility following a lengthy illness.
The daughter of the late James Olen “Buck” Muse and Oma Lois Evers Muse, Betty was born Sept. 3, 1929, in Hess, Okla. She and her family came to Ardmore in a covered wagon settling in the Lone Grove/Deese area. Her family opened a dairy, a general store and cafe in Lone Grove. She was a graduate of Plainview High School class of 1947.
Betty and Enoch Clinton Watterson were married Feb. 7, 1949, in Gainesville, Texas, and from this marriage came two children, Chuck and Deanna. Enoch preceded her in death June 11, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father, brother, Bill Muse, nephews, Ricky, Rocky, Roger and Russell Muse and niece Tippy Muse Conatser.
Betty worked at JCPenney’s as a clerk, Yeager’s clothing store as a salesperson, Carter County Treasurer’s office, and Foodway Grocery store as a cashier. Additionally, she served as a deputy for many years with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.
Prior to establishing Watterson Real Estate and Auction Company in 1963, she and Enoch bought, remodeled and sold homes throughout the county. In addition to serving in the Carter County Assessor’s office as first deputy, she continued as a real estate broker and clerk and cashier in the families auction company along with her auctioneer husband, Enoch. Betty was elected as County Assessor during the 1980’s.
Betty was a lifetime member of the Mattie Bruce Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was delighted by the birth of her grandchildren and cherished each day they spent together.
Survivors include her children, Chuck Watterson and his wife Dana, Deanna Watterson, grandchildren, Dustin Watterson and wife Nicole, BreAnna Watterson, Chad McKinnon and wife Andrea, and Shane McKinnon. Her great-grandchildren are Jordan, Marshall, Chandler, Eli, Penelope and Ian, and dear and special friend Jack her burro.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019 at CrystalRock Cathedral with Dr. Walt Spradling officiating. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum with the assistance of Chad McKinnon, Dustin Watterson, Shane McKinnon, Joe McKinnon, Bryan Conway, Justus Boley, BreAnna Watterson and Jordan McKinnon.
A time of visitation and support for the family will be held Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.
