Three felony charges of child neglect were filed against a 30-year-old Ardmore woman Tuesday in Carter County District Court.
According to Ardmore Police Capt. Keith Ingle, APD officers originally responded to a report on New Year’s day of children that were left unattended.
According to Ingle, the children, ages 13, 10 and 6, reported to responding officers that the mother had told them she would only be gone a few hours, but never returned.
“She had been in jail on another charge,” Ingle said. “That’s why she never came home.”
Ingle said the woman was arrested on New Year’s Eve in Cooke County, Texas, on suspicion of driving under the influence, and failed to notify anyone to retrieve the children.
“In order for a child to be left alone they have to be age 12,” Ingle said. “That’s for a few hours, not a few days.”
Ingle said officers initially responding to the call did not see sufficient evidence to file charges and the case was turned over to DHS.
“DHS took custody of the children and placed them into custody of a family member at that time,” Ingle said.
