FOX — It has often been said that there is strength in numbers.

For the Fox Lady Foxes, their strength lied within six players Saturday night.

Playing with only six players and facing a deficit, Fox managed to pull off a dramatic comeback at home and win the district championship with a 51-45 victory over Maysville.

“These kids just never quit and they never give up,” Fox head coach Mark Williams said.

“They are the epitome of the type of kids I want to coach. We may not be as talented as everyone else, but we leave our guts on the floor every single night.”

The game was full of excitement from start to finish.

Fox took an early 5-2 lead midway through the first quarter before the Lady Warriors 6-0 run to pull in front.

After trading baskets, Maci Rodriguez hit a buzzer beating three-pointer to close out the quarter on top 11-10. Rodriguez scored all seven of her points in the first quarter.

In the second, the teams traded baskets and were tied at 17 before the Lady Warriors defense held the Lady Foxes scoreless for nearly six minutes.

Maysville used the time to go on a 12-0 run, and entered half time up 29-19.

Avery Hoggard led the Lady Foxes in scoring for the quarter, scoring four of her nine points just before half.

In the third quarter the Lady Warriors used a 11-5 run to build a commanding 40-24 lead with less than four minutes left in the frame.

Then the Lady Foxes took over the game.

After trailing by as many as 16, Fox managed to cut the lead to just nine following a 9-2 run to end the third.

Jada Newhouse helped her team with the comeback, after scoring eight of her 12 points in the third.

The Lady Foxes continued their hot shooting and stout defense from third, and went on a 9-1 run to start the fourth.

The Lady Foxes took their first lead of the game at 45-43 following a basket by junior Bree Phelps and never looked back and sealing the game. Phelps led all scorers with 22, including scoring 14 in the fourth.

Fox will now advance to play in the winners bracket Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. against either Central High or Cyril at Central High in Marlow.
