Throughout the 2018-19 season, a lot of people felt like the Plainview Wrestling team was in a full rebuilding mode with a new coaching staff and new faces on the mat.

Fortunately for the Indians, three of their wrestlers didn’t care what predictions were made before the season began as proven on Saturday at the regional tournament.

Nick Vercelli, Lane Johnson and Jeston Gilliam all booked their places for the state tournament next weekend in Oklahoma City, as all three wrestlers qualified Saturday in Marlow.

A total of five wrestlers represented Plainview on the second day of regionals with two of them just falling short of the qualification mark.

Vercelli ultimately claimed fourth overall at 120 pounds, winning his final match via pin in the first period.

Johnson finished fifth overall at 170 pounds, as he will head into the state tournament with 20 wins on the season which include a conference championship, and now state qualifier.

Jeston Gilliam was the top overall placer for the Indians on the weekend as he finished third in the 195 pound weight class.

“We couldn’t be more excited for this group of wrestlers,” Plainview coach Devin Martinez said.

“The sky is the limit for these kids as far as we’re concerned, and we’re super excited to see how they compete next weekend at the state tournament in Oklahoma City. These kids have worked extremely hard all year for this moment.”

The state tournament will begin on Friday and run until Saturday at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City inside the Jim Norick Arena.
