Ardmore native William Dale “Will” Schuerhoff passed away on Monday, April 29, 2019, following a brief battle with cancer.
Son of the late Henry Ralph Schuerhoff and Cecil Pauline Parks Schuerhoff, Will was born on June 23, 1935. He grew up in Ardmore, attending Lincoln Elementary, and Ardmore Junior and Senior High Schools; he was a delegate to Boys State in 1952, and graduated with the class of 1953.
Will later attended Murray State College and the University of Oklahoma before entering the U.S. Army where he served in the Combat Engineers. Following his military service, Will completed a four-year electrical apprenticeship, becoming a journeyman electrician. He worked for multiple electrical service companies—eventually working with the Oklahoma Electric Supply Company in Oklahoma City for over 20 years, where he became one of the most highly regarded and sought after electricians in the region for large-scale, complex industrial projects.
Will met the love of his life, Rheta Jean Reed, in Norman in December of 1957. Will and Rheta married in Norman on June 1, 1958 and soon thereafter had three children: David, Daniel, and Kathy. This year would have marked Will and Rheta’s 61st wedding anniversary.
Following Will’s retirement in 2004, the Schuerhoffs moved into the country home they built just north of Ardmore. Will has said that since his retirement, “I have become a gentleman-farmer, tending to my prickly pear cactus and fighting fire ants.”
Will was an active member and taught Sunday school classes at Western Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, and Trinity Baptist Church in Ardmore. His class members appreciated his encyclopedic knowledge of scripture and biblical history.
Will is survived by his beloved wife Rheta Schuerhoff; two sons David and Daniel Schuerhoff; his daughter Kathy and her husband, Dr. Martin Lopez, Jr.; his sister Barbara Young; grandchildren Michael Schuerhoff and his wife Lori Schuerhoff, Krista Crout, Bailey Schuerhoff, Darian Lopez, Tripp Lopez and his wife Whitney Lopez, and Ty Lopez; and great-grandchildren, Hattie, William Michael, and Anna Schuerhoff.
The family would like to thank Dr. Aleda Toma and her nurse extraordinaire, Vicki for the outstanding and loving care provided. Additional thanks to the staff at Cross Timbers Hospice for the care and compassion provided.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Terry Tolbert and will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in Ardmore at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2019. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers include Darrell Young, Martin Lopez, Daniel Schuerhoff, Michael Schuerhoff, Tripp Lopez, Ty Lopez, and Bailey Schuerhoff.
A time of visitation and support for family and friends will be from 6-7 p.m. at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home in Ardmore. Words of comfort may be sent online at www.hdouglasfuneralhome.com.
