According to Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant area residents have been scammed out of between $2,000 and $2,500.
“Someone is calling claiming to be from the Carter County Sheriff’s Department or the Carter County Clerk’s Office stating that they owe money and they need to make payment immediately,” Bryant said.  “This is a scam and it is not true whatsoever.”
Those scammed out of money made payments on prepaid debit cards. However, Bryant said the sheriff’s office never takes payment of any kind.
“We do not receive any kind of money at the sheriff’s office for fines or anything like that at the Carter County Sheriff’s Office,” Bryant said.
Bryant said not to give out any information or payment to any callers claiming to be from the sheriff’s office or court clerk’s office. Instead, try to get information from the caller.
“Try to get a phone number or any sort of information you can and then pass it along to the sheriff’s office,” Bryant said.
Bryant urged anyone who has been called by someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office or court clerk’s office and anyone who has any information about the scammers to contact the Carter County Sheriff’s Department at (580) 223-06014.
