Correction: The suspect named in the article, Melvin Alpha Jr., was initially misidentified as Melvin Alfred Jr. The Ardmoreite regrets the error.
A Wilson police officer was injured during a pursuit Tuesday night in which the suspect escaped.
Wilson Police Department Captain Josh Taylor said the pursuit began north of Highway 70 on Dillard Rd. just before midnight. The suspect is believed to be 51-year-old Melvin Alpha Jr., who had an outstanding felony warrant for Carter County, Taylor said.
Alpha Jr. allegedly led police down a few different roads in the direction of Oil City before turning into an area with gravel south of Keller Rd, Taylor said.
“That’s when my officer lost control of the vehicle and ended up wrecking,” Taylor said. The officer was transported to Mercy Ardmore and cleared shortly after, only suffering a concussion, he said.
One of the Wilson units was later able to locate the suspect’s vehicle behind an abandoned trailer, where it is believed Alpha Jr. took off on foot, Taylor said.
Taylor said a report will be made requesting an arrest warrant for eluding an officer and, at the time, the suspect’s whereabouts were unknown.
“We don’t know if he’s in a vehicle or where he might be trying to get to,” Taylor said. “He has known associations in the Oklahoma City area and all around Carter County.”
